150 Days In, And Here’s What I’ve Learned

One hundred and fifty days ago, I started as Bridging’s executive director. I’ve spent most of that time listening: to staff, volunteers, board members, agency partners, clients, donors, and supporters like you. I want to share what I learned.
First, Bridging is strong. For 39 years, this community has made sure people moving into stable housing can choose quality furniture for their homes, with dignity. We’re the oldest and largest furniture bank in the country, and our finances are on solid ground.
What struck me most was the people. On any morning in our warehouses, you’ll see staff and volunteers working together with real purpose and having fun doing it. You can’t manufacture that. It’s what makes Bridging, Bridging.
Despite the shifts in federal funding, which are squeezing the agencies that refer clients to us, the need is still there. So, we are strengthening our agency partnerships and developing new ones. And, in response to what I learned from my listening tour, we’re already working to improve communication across our three locations and planning for the long-term care of our buildings. Over the next year, we’ll invest in better technology, more consistent practices between sites and deeper training for volunteers.
Two principles are guiding all of it: the client is our focus and keep Bridging a great place to work and volunteer.
I’m also excited about what’s ahead. There are some big ideas on the horizon, including how the Bridging model might help other communities build furniture banks of their own. More on that soon.
But none of this happens without you. Thank you for your support for Bridging.
