Volunteer Spotlight: Lonnie B. Loves the Community Connections of Bridging
What do you like best about volunteering with Bridging?
“I like to connect with people and be in community with them. I like the interactions with the Saturday volunteers and staff, and it’s nice to start up conversations with people who donate. I also like moving around and helping people in a different way. There are many projects that need to be done in the warehouse. Andrew, the Bloomington warehouse manager, lets us know what to do. It’s fun to finish a project, like loading or unloading the trucks.”
Why does Bridging’s mission matter?
“I like helping people with something as common as furnishings for their home. When people transition to a new living situation, they can connect with Bridging to select what they need and want to make a place their own.
As a licensed social worker at a healthcare organization, I see how it can be hard for people to afford furniture and household items. They are truly struggling to get this stuff. When someone comes to Bridging, a barrier is removed. They have the capacity to do other things, like make appointments or fill out applications, whatever it is.
Bridging is a great resource. We’re gathering resources from the broader community — through donations at the warehouse doors and drives for essential items, like blankets — so people can access them and furnish their homes. It is lovely how the organization has evolved. There are thousands of people being served.”
What do you enjoy doing outside of Bridging?
“I enjoy cycling in the community and joining different bike riding groups. I like getting outdoors to enjoy the parks and trails.”
