Great Choices and Opportunities Through Bridging: Alice B. Shares Her Story

A recent client of Bridging, Alice is a collector of books and an avid reader. She reads and listens to many genres— westerns, anime, thrillers— anything that catches her interest. She also loves to make connections with people to get to know their stories. Utilizing this strength, she has worked as a direct support professional for adults with developmental disabilities, an assistant at a senior day program, and a math and reading tutor.

Alice found out about Bridging through a caseworker at Fraser, an agency focused on its mission to make a meaningful and lasting difference for individuals and families living with diverse intellectual, emotional, and/or physical needs. Working through a county contract, Fraser coordinated with referring agency partner Ramsey County to schedule Alice’s Bridging appointment.

Alice recently moved into her first home, and she was thrilled to visit Bridging where she selected furniture and essential household items.

A family member and two Bridging volunteers joined Alice on her shopping trip through the Bridging warehouse.

“I didn’t know what to expect. There were so many options. I was looking for a kitchen table. I found one. I also got a full-sized bed, two love seats in my favorite color – pink, a coffee table and end table, bath towels, and bedding.”

“Everyone was super friendly, helpful, and patient. It was helpful to go through the warehouse and have someone guide the experience. When you’re visually impaired and on your own with so many choices, it’s helpful to narrow the options. It made it easier. I could decide what was best for me.”

Recently engaged, Alice and her fiancé share their furnished home and look forward to their future together.

Alice is currently looking for a new job that focuses on helping individuals gain skills that lead them to independence and a fulfilling future. Alice hopes to make positive connections, finding out about each person’s favorite books, movies, and interests along the way!

“I want people to now that Bridging is here, that their services are available,” she says. “Someone should never be ashamed to ask for help. It’s a big blessing to have this furniture.”
