A place to call your own: Why we need to advocate for affordable housing

By Shereese Turner, Sr. Dir.; TC Habitat for Humanity, Bridging board member, former Bridging client

23 years ago, the lowest point of my life was also filled with turning points, excitement, relief and an opportunity to press reset. I learned quickly there were many resources available to single moms and children. If there was a need there were resources available.

Late summer of 1995 a new school year was approaching, and I had no address of my own which meant I had work to do. Residing in a shelter was unfamiliar to me and my children; the days got longer, and affordable housing seem to be less attainable the more I looked. Finally, I received a call saying I was approved for an apartment three blocks away from the shelter. Without hesitation I accepted and moved in a week later.

I’ve never been so relieved

A ton was lifted off my shoulders, but now I was faced with an even bigger task. How to maintain it? Living expenses were increasing by the month and now I was facing my very first winter in Minneapolis.

The place I called home for three years meant the world to me: a North Minneapolis two-bedroom apartment I called a haven. This place allowed me to have a permanent address, integrate into a forgiving village– a foundation that was built with community schools, friends, surrogate grandmothers, holiday gatherings, fish fries and humble beginnings which led to homeownership.

Fast forward to 2019: Because of the lack of transportation, urban and suburban living is in high demand. Folks want to live closer to where they work and if they’re priced out, it creates an even greater need for affordable housing. Basic transportation, healthcare and affordable housing continues to be barrier for many individuals and families. Housing advocates are pushing for more investments in affordable housing before the rental cost rise to the point where it could become too expensive for those who need affordable housing the most.

It’s valuable to develop safe havens for all families, and this is why I support Homeless Day on the Hill.
