Meet Yvette H-Atkinson: Hennepin County Housing Specialist for Phoenix Services Corporation, 2024 Phoenix Services Corporation Employee of the Year

Bridging Partner Agency Spotlight: Phoenix Services Corporation

“Being able to get Bridging, at low or no cost — it’s a stepping stone,” say Yvette, a housing specialist at Phoenix Services Corporation, a Bridging agency partner.

Yvette works alongside individuals who have recently been referred to Phoenix Services Corporation, an organization that specializes in meeting the needs of adults with disabilities. They offer support and resources focused on housing stabilization, self-care, healthcare needs, sensory motor support, and community engagement to help adults maintain their independence.

“We get referrals from coordinated entry. People who have experienced short or long-term homelessness come to our agency. We provide tenancy support. I work with each client to develop a housing plan including a budget for housing and other living expenses. I assist with the housing search and help them find a home.

Yvette helps clients navigate what can be a complex process toward sustainable housing. She considers each individual’s unique needs and strengths, funding sources that cover housing costs for eligible adults, and available housing options. Yvette builds relationships with landlords to increase access to quality housing.

“People we work with have been through trauma. I help educate landlords, so there is no judgment about clients and their situations. We all deserve second chances,” says Yvette.

An advocate for clients, her personable approach and professionalism are woven with compassion, resourcefulness, and humor.  Yvette shares that her own lived experience —navigating resources to support her mother, a single mom with mental health issues, caring for her son who has severe disabilities, and her journey to housing stability with Bridging years ago— shapes her work alongside clients.

“Everyone has a story to tell,” says Yvette, “I’m here to listen and offer support in the process.”

When a client finds a place to live, Yvette helps them negotiate and complete a lease. For every lease that is signed, she also inspects the property to ensure it is a safe and habitable place to live according to county standards.”

A referral to Bridging is also an important part of the process as someone moves into their home.

“Having that stability with that furniture, it provides the solid ground that someone needs to move forward. My clients will say, ‘When I first get into my apartment, it echoes.’ It’s empty. To have all that furniture, it makes a difference. After clients furnish their homes, they’ll invite me in. They want me to show me everything and how they set it up. Their faces light up. Individuals can pick out things they want. They can choose, and they’re not rushed. They can get the furniture they need. Some clients have sensory issues. The material or color  really makes a difference.”

Yvette observes that the dignity and person-centered experience of a shopping appointment at Bridging matters as much as the furnishings.

“Just as important are the staff and volunteers who understand how important it is for each person to feel welcomed and accepted.”

“Bridging gives people hope.”

Yvette expresses gratitude for her supervisor, Elizabeth, who recognized her strengths and hired her for her role at Phoenix Services. Within her first year of service, Yvette was selected as Phoenix Services’ employee of the year. Congratulations!

Thank you, Yvette and Phoenix Services, for your incredible work and partnership with Bridging!
