Kameshia W. Celebrates Her Style: Upcycled Furnishings & New Beginnings
A mother and full-time employee, Kameshia and her daughter were thrilled to move into their new home six months ago. Kameshia secured housing and a referral to Bridging through partner agency Salvation Army.
With the assistance of volunteers, she enjoyed a virtual shopping experience at Bridging that exceeded her expectations.
“I was having some car trouble, so it was helpful to meet virtually. It was fun! They [the volunteers] were easy to talk to and extremely helpful. I felt like I was talking to an old friend. They went slowly, so I could see everything. They tried to show what the sizes of the furniture looked like. I have limited space in my smaller two-bedroom apartment.”
Kameshia was pleased with the volunteers’ attentiveness to her unique style and preferences. They found sheets, a tablecloth, and placements all in green — her favorite color. Kameshia selected a couch, love seat, coffee table, and rug for her living room along with a dresser and a full-sized bed for herself. Kameshia also found her new favorite treasure, a one-of-a-kind antique bench that now sits at the end of her bed.
As she browsed the shelves, Kameshia noticed a high standard of quality: “Bridging had new and cleaner items than other places I had visited,” she says.
Salvation Army covered the $70 fee for her full household setup at Bridging, and Kameshia coordinated her furniture pickup with the Bridging warehouse team.
“I needed to earn some extra money to pay for the moving truck. I appreciated the flexibility of the warehouse team in accommodating my timing and needs, and they were so personable.”
After unpacking and organizing her new home furnishings, Kameshia is elated about her new home.
“I was so happy I found a bed and everything I need, and I’m even happier that I’m getting it for free. I sleep a lot better on my new bed. It’s extremely important with my little one and my job schedule. It’s really hard to get a good night’s sleep on an air mattress. And my daughter wakes up early!”
Kameshia can’t emphasize enough the positive impact a furnished home has had on her family.
“I see a difference in my daughter. She enjoys our home a lot more. I feel more like an adult with a furnished home. It’s so much better! I don’t feel stressed about needing anything for the household. My home feels complete now.”
